Smith was a man of integrity, but whenever you get into government you inevitably let at least some people down because of the decisions you are required to make. He would have done his best as PM but there would still have been some people disillusioned with Labour under him, just as there were under Blair as PM. Had he been PM in 2001 then there is every chance he would have backed up America in the war on terror, just as Blair did. And economically there would have been similar criticisms towards a Smith government from the Left of the Labour Party, just as there was towards the Blair government in real life. His death prevented his reputation from being damaged. If Blair had also died in 1995 or 1996 prior to becoming PM then he would also have been lionized in a similar manner to Smith.
